Media ethics-Prioritization and coverage of news by the Indian news media Swarup Aditi1, Dr. Kumar Neera2 1Second Year-Bachelors of Mass Media, SIES (Nerul) College of Arts, Science & Commerce 2Assistant Professor, SIES (Nerul) College of Arts, Science & Commerce Online published on 2 April, 2019. Abstract Media is often referred to as the Fourth Pillar of Democracy. Under article 19(1) (A) of the Indian Constitution, all citizens are guaranteed the right to ‘Freedom of Speech and Expression'. It is this very article that secures the Freedom of Press. In any modern day, liberal democracy, news media serves as a tool of information, meaning, the press is responsible for making sure that the citizens of the country are aware of its most important on-goings. This not only leads to aware citizenship but also ensures mobilization of public opinion in order to bring about positive social change in the society. In recent times though, media seems to be derailing from this and focussing on increasing readership and TRPs (Television Rating Points) rather than providing substantial news which is a fundamental diversion from the purpose of news media and journalism itself. Although we as citizens and consumers of media can see this negative phenomenon taking a stronger hold every day, the members of the Indian Media keep at it as if their viewers do not understand that they are being misguided. In this research paper, I have tried to establish that this quest for TRPs and increased revenues is destroying the press'reputation with the masses and is branding them as irresponsible.
