Abstract In spite of several efforts made by the government for the betterment of backward regions, the problem of regional disparities is continuous increases in various dimensions of socioeconomic development in India. In this paper, we have focuses on a micro-level analysis of regional variation in socio-economic conditions for Hathras district. Two different methodological principles, i.e. Development Index prepared by UNDP and Principal Component Analysis has been used to identify the position of each block in terms of socioeconomic development. The study suggests that the present trend of disparities may control through decentralized planning in terms of decision making and financial powers for the faster socio-economic development of the backward regions.
