Inclusive Education in India – Challenges and Implications for Persons with Special Needs

Abstract

The article gives an holistic view about ‘Inclusive Education’ for the persons with special needs in India. Although Special Education and Integrated Education system has done a pioneering work in the field of education of children with special needs in India, it has its own share of shortcomings, due to which the need for ‘Inclusive Education has been felt. This article discusses in detail the paradigm shifts in education for the persons with special needs and the philosophy behind Inclusive Education. The current scenario, challenges of Inclusive Education and the way ahead has also been discussed wherein it has been emphasized that ‘Education for All’ could remain an empty promise on the part the Government of India if there are not adequate means to operationalize and implement.
