Inheritance of Resistance to Rust [Melampsora lini (PERS.) LEV.] in Linseed

Deshpande R. B., Jeswani L. M.

Division of Botany, Indian Agricultural Resea'fh Institute, New Delhi

Summary

1. Linseed rust caused by Melampsora lini is a wide spread disease throughout the linseed and flax producing countries. In flax, or in linseed to be utilized for fibre, the damage caused is two-fold-reduction in the yield of seed or oil content and weakening the fibre.

2. Resistance to rust is a heritable character completely dominant over susceptibility to rust and segregating in F2 on a simple monogenic fashion. The F3 results in the verietal crosses in L. usitatissimum have confirmed the F2 observations.

3. The F1 and F2 results in the species crosses are similar to those in the varietal crosses with regard to the mode of inheritance of rust resistance.

4. Rust resistance has been found to be inherited independently of morphological characters, such as colour of petal, anther and seed.
