Chromosome Studies of Bihar Bananas Roy R. S., Sharma C. Bihar Agncultural College, Sabour, Bhagalpur Summary Important commercial varieties of banana in Bihar such as Malbhog and Champa are susceptible to diseases. A wild variety of banana has been found to be more resistant to diseases having greater vigour than commercial types. The commercial varieties such as Malbhog, Champa, Sabja, Sakarchina, Martban etc. are triploids. Baghnar and Kothia are diploids. The wild type grown from seedlings sprouted suckers in 80 days, from the date of planting, as against 300 days ofthe Champa variety planted on the same date and same type of soil. The wild variety is also diploid. The commercial variety i.e., Champa, if left uncared for few years begins to produce fertile pollen grains and viable seeds. Top | |
