Induced Variability for Alkali Digestion Index in Rice Kang G. S., Puri R. P., Siddiq E. A. Division of Genetics, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, 110 012, India Abstract Gamma ray and EMS treated populations of rice variety ‘IR8’ along with an equal number of control population were raised in the M1, M2 and M3 generations and analysed for alkali digestion index. Treatments, in general, showed significantly higher variability over the respective control and of the two mutagens employed, gamma rays induced relatively more variation as compared to EMS. The heritable component of induced variation was also found to be more in the irradiated material in the M2 and M3 generations thus suggesting that gamma ray treatment was as effective as chemical mutagens like EMS in generating genuine polygenic mutations. The treatment mean tended to shift away from the control mean in the negative direction. The behaviour of the mean in this variety has been discussed in the light of its previous selection history. Based on the heritability estimates desirability of practicing selection from M3 has been suggested. Top | |
