Higher Education and Skill Development for Faster Economic Growth

Abstract

Higher education and skill development for faster economic growth is presented in two sections: (i) higher education, and (ii) skill development. Deficiencies and inadequacies in the present system of managing Higher Education (HE) through Universities, Colleges, and specialized institutions in the public sector, and the newly promoted private institutions of recent years are pointed out. Mechanisms introduced and initiatives taken by the Centre through umbrella organizations associated with various specialized fields of HE are covered, along with programmes being pursued in the Eleventh and Twelfth Five Year Plan periods. The importance of HE is presented for developing well rounded personalities among the youth of benefit to themselves, the society and the nation. Reforms in higher education and skill development being implemented at present can result in developing highly skilled manpower with expertise in multiple fields of specialization to serve the nation.
