Lipase content in the pancreas and small intestine of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix Japonica) Beena V.*, Philomina P.T. Department of Physiology and Biochemistry, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Kerala - 680 651. * Part of M.V.Sc. thesis submitted to Kerala Agricultural University. Abstract Forty-eight week old Japanese quails were utilised for quantifying the lipase content in the pancreas and small intenstine. The enzyme in a particular region was studied in 24 birds (12 males and 12 females). Pancreatic lipase activity in the male and female Japanese quails were 73.37±7.78 and 38.40±3.39 LU/g of tissue, respectively and the overall lipase activity when values in both sexes were pooled was 55:88±5.52 LU/g of tissue. Intestinal mucous membrane of adult male and female Japanese quails showed a mean lipase activity of 38.80±10.93 and 12.44±4.1S LU/g of tissue and the overall value was 25.62±6.34 LU/g of tissue. The male birds exhibited a higher lipase activity than their counterpart females. The pooled values in both region when compared, pancreatic lipase activity was higher indicating that pancreas was the major site of lipase origin in Japanese quails. Top Key words Japanese Quail, Lipase, Pancreas, Small Intestine. Top | |
