Abstract

The study of the effect of alliums (onion lind garlic) in the Japanese quails of both sex revealed hypocholesterolemic effect only in the pooled groups on basis of pooled data. Whereas, onion and garlic were found to be ineffective when observed between age groups within a sex or between sex of a particular age group. These results indicate that onion and garlic are effective as hypocholesterolemic agents only to limited extent. The cholesterol level Was found to be more in the female birds as compared to male birds and was also found to increase with age in both sex except for the level being lower in the laying birds (nine-week old) probably due to the plasma cholesterol being diverted towards yolk formation.
