Abstract

This paper aims to focus on the flood disaster scenario of Bihar due to high rainfall in a short span of time, break of embankment dam, and channel shifting of Kosi River, flood types, area afflicted, causes of recent floods, and major consequences A comprehensive survey was done by the group of researchers in the highly affected areas to understand the factors responsible for this natural hazard. Bihar is highly prone to flood related disasters. This natural disaster has more often than not led to enormous loss of lives and properties which have further led to displacement of a large number of people. On the basis of the latest remote sensing data, the current flood of 2017 was much larger than that of 2008 flood. The analysis is based on observations made in the recent report of various national and international agencies. This paper finally concludes with recommendation that information about the hazards and their spatial distribution can play a significant role in taking preventive measures for further reinforcement and reform the Disaster Management System in the state. Moreover, they can also pave the way for similar activities in other states of India.
