Abstract

Family is considered as a link between continuity and change. It determines the development of individuals, as it is a major source of nurturance, emotional bonding and socialization. It also has the major potential to provide stability and support when problems arise. On the whole, the India family provided an enduring pattern of continues intermittent ties that play a significant part in maintaining the physical and psychological integrity of the individual over a period of lime. The study observed that the effectiveness of social support system and network can neither depend purely on personality characteristics nor can be purely environmental. They are rather complementary, in the sense that a competent person with lack of resources or the enriched environment resources with a shy, depressed, and lonely individual cannot bring forth the desired effect of social support network. The effectiveness of the social support system will be highest, where there is optimum interaction between the person and the resources that will bring the right kind of social support at the right place.
