Abstract Higher education has made a significant contribution to economic development, social progress and political democracy in India and Tripura is no exception. Cost analysis is very significant for the purpose of planning, decision-making and monitoring for every field so is the case with education. Various concepts of costs help in understanding how they can lead to improved policy-decisions. Financing and costing of higher education is the most important, yet a complex, function involving policy making, planning and prudent financial management. If there are deficiencies in the mechanism, the system of higher education development would be seriously impaired. It is in this context, the entire gamut of cost and financing education, particularly the higher education, becomes an integral part of the overall development strategy. The study aims to analyse the cost of higher education with special reference to general degree colleges of Tripura. The paper is based on primary and secondary data.
