Abstract

This paper has been designed to construct and standardize Emotional Competence Scale. The steps followed for the development and validation this scale were planning, try-out, scoring, item analysis and establishment of norm. Initially, 78 items were written in both the languages i.e. Hindi and English for the first draft. These items were presented to 20 experts of Psychology, Teacher Education and Language and on the basis of their unanimity, 58 items were retained in the second draft. The retained items were administered to 320 school students selected from Haryana. Finally, ‘t’ test was applied to find out the item discriminating value between 27% lower and 27% upper group. The items having significant‘t’ values were selected whereas others were rejected. Only 34 items in both the languages i.e. Hindi and English were retained in the final draft. Split-half method and test-retest method were used to calculate its reliability and found 0.81 and 0.882 respectively that indicated the scale highly reliable. The scale was validated against the content validity. Norms were prepared for classifying the students as low, average and highly emotionally competent.
