Impact of tomato cultivation on socio-economic variables: a field study on West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh Dr. Mody Philip*, Sri. Abstract Tomato cultivation has been playing a vital role in improving the socio-economic conditions of its growers in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. Commercialization of tomatoes are found have made remarkable positive impact on various socio-economic variables like construction of buildings, education, bank deposits (saving), maintenance of tomato field and others. Moreover, tomato cultivation has made significant contribution in generating employment opportunities for the people of the study area in particular and for outsiders (i.e., daily wage earners, permanent workers of land owners etc.). The present study revealed that the number of working days in case of both male and female has been increasing year after years. However, males have been dominating over female counterpart both in terms of working days and numbers of workers in tomato cultivation. Commercial tomato cultivation may brings lot of smiles to its cultivators as the present study revealed that they have made highest investment on education to the extent of 31 percent of total earning made from it. With this background, the present study make an attempt to analyse investment made on various socio-economic variables from earning made from tomatoes in West Kameng district. Also, it endeavours to study the trend of average family members working in tomato field in the study area. In addition, the same has also examined status of working days spent by both male and female workers in tomato fields.
